Korean Characters Input Techniques for Searching
Basic Steps
Log on to OCLC Cataloging (if not logged on).
On the Search menu click OCLC Online or click on the toolbar.
The Search OCLC Online dialog box appears.
Check settings for Default Database (WorldCat for searching) if necessary.
Select an appropriate search method.
Please ignore all the diacritics in searching terms when you type.
In the Query box,
Type a numeric, derived, or keyword search and click .
Or
Type a phrase search and click .
Numeric Search
ISBN number:
Type 10 digits; may omit leading 0. Omit hyphens. Type x (last character) in upper- or lowercase
Example: Type 8988327892, click
ISSN number:
Type 8 digits. With index label, hyphen is optional. Type x (last character) in upper- or lowercase
Example: Type 12273562, or
sn 1227-3562, or sn 12273562, click
OCLC control number:

** The number of commas for each search key is required even if the search term does not have enough words **
** Not effective way if the title starts with common words (e.g. Hanguk ui)**

** Korean characters search keys will not retrieve those records without vernacular fields; Hangul search keys will retrieve those records with Hangul vernacular fields only; Hancha search keys will retrieve all those CJK records with the same Chinese characters in vernacular fields **
** When a vernacular name or title has fewer characters than the search key allows, enter as many characters as it has. Type a circumflex (^) after the last character to narrow down the search result **

Type au and a word from the name, then type and au and another word. For a corporate name, use 3-5 key words. Be sure to combine the keywords with and. Finally, click to start the search.

Enter CJK-Entry Mode
Click on the button in the Search OCLC Online Online window; or, press +. The CJK Entry dialog box will appear at the bottom of the screen.
Change Input Method to McCune-Reischauer (MR) for Korean language script including both Hangul and Chinese characters (Hancha)
To change the input method and language script:
Click on the button.
Click on McCune-Reischauer (MR), then click [OK]
Enter Input Codes and Selecting Characters
Type the romanization of each character in the Input Code Box, according to McCune-Reischauer Romanization System.
Select the character from the matching list by typing the number for that character. If the list is longer than 10, press the key to move to the next list. Press the key to move back to the previous list.
Entering Korean Diacritics
Click the button to retrieve the character map.
Select the correct diacritic and then click the button.
Alif (): Used between n and g to distinguish from ng: i.e. Hanguk, yongu
Ayn (): Used after k, t, ch, p for the following aspirated plosive consonants: K1 L1 J1 M1 r e s p e c t i v e l y
