Mr. Morimoto provided training in three sections: LCC literary author numbers; field 053 addition in literary author NARs; and construction of LCC based call numbers with literary author numbers. Mr. Morimoto also provided exercises for participants at the end of training. Please refer to the full training handout for details. Some highlights from this training:

·         In addition to the instructions given in the Workshop, Mr. Morimoto cautioned catalogers to consult their local cataloging policy and procedures.

·         Not all works by literary authors are classed under an LCC individual literary author number. Non-literary works by literary authors are classed with the topic.

·         Catalogers should carefully examine NARs when there are multiple NARs or multiple 053s, or a NAR is coded undifferentiated, etc.

·         Catalogers should carefully consult LCC schedule for correct corresponding period, and/or apply pattern of order in certain earlier period, e.g.

o   Chinese: pre-221 B.C. Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties

o   Japanese: early Japanese to late Edo periods

·         If there is gap in alphabetical sequence, on which the Romanized name of the literary author in question falls, a new class number needs to be proposed through SACO

·         All new literary author numbers should be arranged according to the Library of Congress filing rules.

·         Before formulating a literary author number (053 field in an authority record), follow the instruction provided by Mr. Morimoto, pay attention to MARC21 008 fixed field coding to determine whether you can add 053 or not

·         When formulating a literary author number, consult LCC schedule, LC catalog, and if applicable, literary author number lists compiled by CEAL CTP.
