    Chinese Studies Librarian 

    The University of Chicago Library invites applicants for the position of Chinese Studies Librarian.
     
    The East Asian Collection has holding of more than 700,000 volumes of library resources in various formats in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and a growing collection of electronic resources. The Chinese collection of over 420,000 volumes is particularly strong in classics, philosophy, history, literature, archaeology, philology and art history. As one of the finest such collections in the country, it serves not only the faculty and students of the university but also scholars throughout the country. The East Asian Collection is housed in the Joseph Regenstein Library.

    Under the direction of the Curator of the East Collection, this position is responsible for the following: Select monographs, serials (including out-of-print materials), electronic resources in Chinese language and those on Chinese studies in Western languages, develop a long-term acquisitions policy as well a program of reviewing and evaluating the needs of the collections. Work with the Curator of the East Asian Collection, Library Development Office, the Assistant Director for Collections, and other specialized staff to identify and develop donor sources and special funding opportunities. Participate in contacts with donors and potential donors.

    Provide specialized reference service; initiate specialized instruction opportunities for faculty and students regarding the Library and its resources as well as bibliographic methods and research strategies. Responsible for managing, coordinating computer support, and providing services to Chinese studies e-resources. Participate in the development of digital/multimedia resources and services in the Library and on campus. Develop and maintain electronic finding aids and subject content on Chinese studies for the East Asian Collection’s web page.

    Under the direction of the Head of East Asia Technical Services, perform original cataloging for Chinese materials in all formats. Participate in formulating cataloging policy, priorities, and work procedures. Participate in the activities of the library and scholarly organizations at the local, regional, national, and international level.     QUALIFICATIONS: Education: A graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited library school and graduate work in Chinese Studies or closely-related subject field, or a Ph.D. in Chinese Studies, is required. Experience: Significant related experience in an academic research library is required. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources for Chinese studies, reference tools, and trends in publishing industry and book trade in China is also required. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of AACR2, LC subject headings and classifications, MARC21 formats and authority files is highly preferred. Skills: Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with faculty, students and staff and possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. A high degree of computer literacy and a demonstrated interest in the application of information technologies are required. Languages: Reading knowledge of modern and classical Chinese is required as is fluency in spoken and written English.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: Appointment salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include retirement plan, insurance, and paid time off. There is a tuition benefit plan for college age and younger children.

Performs bibliographic searching, catalog maintenance and revision of records in various formats in OCLC and CATNYP and Millenium. Creates item-level records for newly cataloged books. Performs other tasks as assigned.

    The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seek an experienced and innovative Chinese Studies Librarian to develop, catalog, and manage the Chinese collection and provide services to China-related academic programs across Penn's schools and departments.

    The University of Pennsylvania Libraries' Chinese collection dates back to the late 19th century when D. B. McCartee, a Presbyterian missionary to East Asia, donated his personal library to Penn. Since the mid-1990s, the Collection has been developing rapidly to support the growing Chinese Studies programs in Penn academic departments and schools. The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations offers a wide range of China-related courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, with particular strengths in Chinese archaeology, architecture, history, languages, literature, philosophy, and religions. During the past decade, academic courses focusing on modern China have grown in the departments of Anthropology, Economy, History, History and Sociology of Science, Political Science, and Sociology, as well as in the schools of Business, Communication, Design, Education, Law, and Social Policy and Practice. As of June 2008, the Chinese Collection holds approximately 160,000 volumes of books, 160 currently received serials, and 1,300 microforms. It also provides access to specialized electronic databases, such as the China Academic Journals, Chinese Ancient Texts, Guo xue bao dian, National Index to Chinese Newspapers and Periodicals, and Si ku quan shu.

    The Penn Libraries include fifteen libraries and an off-site high density storage facility. System-wide scholarly resources number over 5.9 million books, 44,000 current serials (of which 16,000 are e-journals) and 700 databases. The library is a leader in the development of digital library services and collections and is aggressively experimenting with and adopting new technology in research and teaching, including courseware.

    Position Summary:
    Reporting to the Director of Collection Development & Management, the Chinese Studies Librarian selects scholarly resources to support Penn's Chinese Studies programs and the larger educational mission of the university; organizes and supervises the technical processing of these materials; and provides specialized China-related reference services for Penn faculty and students.
    The Chinese Studies Librarian will have knowledge of changing patterns of scholarship and publishing in China-related fields of study, and will be committed to the international and interdisciplinary strengths of Penn's academic programs. While continuing to focus on traditional formats, the Chinese Studies Librarian will actively promote new digital media and services and is expected to seek out external funding opportunities and develop collaborative partnerships worldwide.

    Overall responsibilities:

    * Develops and manages the Chinese collection in the vernacular in all media, and selects relevant resources in western languages in collaboration with other subject librarians in area studies, the humanities, and social sciences.
    * Manages, coordinates, and participates in the process of acquisition and bibliographic control of all types of resources in Chinese, using the Voyager library management system and OCLC bibliographic utility. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for all resources in Chinese and provides appropriate classification and subject analysis according to national and local standards. Serves as a resource person, both within the Chinese Unit and throughout the Libraries, on matters pertaining to the bibliographic control of Chinese resources as well as the maintenance of the integrity of the online Chinese catalog data.
    * Provides specialized reference, instruction and academic liaison services primarily to faculty and graduate students related to East Asia in general and China in particular. Works closely with the faculty and students of Penn's East Asia Program in developing holdings and in providing necessary support for the program's research and teaching activities. Serves on a rotating basis as a representative of the East Asian Collection on Penn's Center for East Asian Studies Executive Committee.

    * Participates in the larger field of East Asia librarianship on the national and international level.
    * Promotes effective relationships with colleagues, their respective campus constituencies, and donors.
    * Supervises and trains one full-time Bibliographic Specialist and several student employees.

    Qualifications:

    An accredited Master's degree in library or information science with five years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent in education and training. Advanced knowledge of Chinese history, literature and culture; with a graduate degree in East Asian Studies preferred. Experience in using CJK bibliographic utilities for searching and cataloging. Knowledge of Pinyin conversion and Chinese transcription. Knowledge of the Chinese publishing industry and trends in scholarly communications. Fluent command of both written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin), as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Ability to work independently and collegially with librarians and users. Reading knowledge of another East Asian and/or European language, preferred.

    The Huntington Library invites applications for a temporary professional position in the Manuscripts Department processing and creating records for a manuscript collection related to the history of Chinese Americans in twentieth-century Southern California. This grant-sponsored position is funded through 30 June 2009; begins immediately.

    Essential Functions:
    Processes and creates other access tools (including finding aids and MARC records) for a manuscript collection related to the Chinese American experience in Southern California. Works under the general supervision of one of the Library’s Curators of Western American Historical Manuscripts.

    Qualifications:
    M.L.S. degree or M.A. in American History, or equivalent training and experience. Must have familiarity with descriptive archival standards and procedures. Basic computer literacy required, including familiarity with MS Office applications. Preferred: Formal training or experience in a manuscripts or archival repository or special collections library. Experience with FileMaker Pro database software and the suite of Microsoft Office applications. Specific academic subject knowledge in the history of California is strongly desired, such as would be achieved with the completion of a B.A. in American history or American studies. A background in ethnic studies, especially of the Chinese American experience, desirable, as is some reading knowledge of Chinese.

Description
Princeton is seeking a Chinese Art Specialist to support development of Marquand Library’s collections on Chinese art and archaeology. The incumbent will help build new Chinese-language art collections and will assist with management of existing collections. The position reports to the Librarian of the Marquand Library of Art & Archaeology.

Responsibilities
Collection development—Help develop and manage vernacular-language collections on Chinese art and archaeology. Review publisher and dealer catalogs, vendor notification slips, scholarly bibliographies and book notices. Recommend acquisition of current and out-of-print publications. Select titles for off-site storage.
Technical services—Assist with ordering, accessioning and cataloging Chinese-language art materials. Coordinate order placement with acquisitions staff at the East Asian and Firestone libraries. Transfer information from printed order records to the online Voyager system. Download bibliographic records from OCLC or create original abbreviated records. Enhance cataloging for Marquand’s existing Chinese-language collections.
Public services—Provide occasional assistance to faculty and students using Marquand’s Chinese-language art collections

Qualifications
Required—Master’s degree in East Asian art or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent command of modern and classical Chinese language. Proficiency in Pinyin and Wade-Giles Romanization systems. English language fluency. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Library-related computer skills. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Preferred—MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of Chinese publishing and book trade. CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) cataloging experience in OCLC/RLIN. Experience with Voyager ILS. Academic library experience.
Desirable—Knowledge of Japanese.

Term and Appointment
This is a half-time, two-year term position. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Professional Specialist rank depending upon qualifications and experience. Extensions beyond the initial term are possible.
