    General Purpose
    Under the general direction of the senior Japanese Catalog Librarian, the Catalog Librarian provides original cataloging for a wide range of print and non-print Japanese script materials for the Yale University Library system. The Catalog Librarian performs descriptive cataloging in accordance with national standards and the requirements of bibliographic utilities as well as Yale's local online system: Voyager. Subject analysis and classification assignment follow Library of Congress standards and local practice. Authority records follow NACO standards and are contributed to the national authority file. Other responsibilities include keeping abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends, and resolving cataloging problems. Through active participation in the East Asia Librarians' Group, the Japanese Catalog Librarian contributes to management planning for the Japanese collection and the East Asia Library. Librarians participate actively in the Library's management, assessment, training, and development programs, contribute to implementing the mission of the Library, and keep active professionally.

    Responsibilities
    Performs original cataloging for Japanese language materials in all formats. Contributes authority records to the national authority files following NACO and SACO guidelines. May perform complex copy cataloging as needed. Performs bibliographic maintenance in Yale's local online system as needed. Trains and revises the work of other catalog assistants, including temporary or student employees, for Japanese materials. Resolves cataloging problems for catalog assistants and students as appropriate. Through active participation in the East Asia Librarians' Group, contributes to management planning for the Japanese collection and the East Asia Library. Participates in committees and other task groups as required by the position. Undertakes other assignments and projects as needed. May be required to assist with disaster recovery situations.

    Qualifications
    Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. Appointment to this rank is limited to two years at which time it is expected that the individual will develop necessary requirements to meet expectations. Familiarity with AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject analysis and classification, and MARC21. Preferred: familiarity with the Modified Hepburn Romanization system; experience with bibliographic utilities and integrated library systems such as OCLC and Voyager as well as other network-based tools, such as Cataloger’s Desktop and/or Classification Web. If extended, must meet requirements for promotion. Fluency in Japanese, including Kana and Kanji and in-depth knowledge of Japanese history and culture. Strong analytical, problem solving, and academic research skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including experience with Windows, or other computer platform hardware and software as needed to perform library functions. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others in a culturally diverse, rapidly changing and demanding environment.

    TITLE: Tateuchi Cataloger for Japanese Retrospective Conversion
    (Two-year temporary position)

    Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and faculty recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as the most important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives the highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of graduating seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment. The Libraries was commended in the University’s 2003 accreditation review for its rich collection, well-qualified staff, and “exceptional service to students, staff development, and a commitment to planning and assessment of service.” The University Libraries was the proud recipient of the 2004 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award.

    EAST ASIA LIBRARY:

    The East Asia Library at the University of Washington is among the ten major such collections in North America. Services and collections are housed in the main branch located in Gowen Hall, and a large auxiliary stacks space nearby ensures growth space for the collections. The library enjoys strong support within the University of Washington Libraries, with its Director reporting directly to the Dean of University Libraries. The East Asia Library supports the research and educational programs of the China, Japan and Korea Studies Programs.

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:

    The University of Washington Libraries seeks an energetic cataloging librarian committed to providing high quality access to library materials to fill the two-year temporary position of Tateuchi Cataloger for Japanese Retrospective Conversion. Reporting to the Japanese Studies Librarian, the Tateuchi Cataloger performs original cataloging and enhances available cataloging copy for Japanese materials in all formats from the Japanese cataloging backlog of the East Asia Library. The cataloger is responsible for managing the backlog cataloging project for Japanese materials, training and supervising student employees for copy cataloging, and for reporting the progress of the project to the Japanese Studies Librarian. The position demonstrates the ability to communicate appropriately, effectively, and positively.

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
    1. Performs original cataloging in OCLC using MARC21 formats, LC subject headings, LC classification schedules, AACR2 - 2002 revision, and LC Rule Interpretations.

    2. Enhances existing cataloging records in OCLC as appropriate, in accordance with OCLC policies and guidelines.

    3. Works with the Japanese Studies Librarian and Japanese Cataloger to carry out the workflow and procedures for processing and cataloging the Japanese backlog materials and for meeting productivity goals.

    4. Maintains detailed statistics for the backlog project for Japanese materials.

    5. Trains and supervises student assistants in cataloging-related duties.

    6. Participates in East Asia Library staff and librarian meetings to contribute toward library goals by accomplishing duties related to the project.

    7. Maintains daily and monthly reports of work completed.

    8. Performs other duties related to the project as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:

    1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

    2. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

    3. Demonstrated reading proficiency in the Japanese language.

    4. Demonstrated strong communication skills in the English language.

    SALARY: $42,600 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

    Position Title: Librarian
    AICJ Junior and Senior High School
    Hiroshima Japan
    AICJ Junior and Senior High School is a private school accommodating 420 students in the junior high school and 140 students in the senior high school. In the junior high school we are adapting a tailor-made curriculum satisfying the Japanese MOE requirements with half of the courses in grades 7 and 8 are taught in English leading to an immersion English program in grade 9 for students wishing to pursue their studies overseas in the future. Approximately half of our junior high school staff is from overseas teaching math, science, social studies, design technology, physical education as well as English; representing a cultural diversity that includes New Zealand, Australia, Philippines, Britain, India, Mauritius, Canada and America.
    At present, the senior high school is following the Japanese MOE curriculum, which prepares them for the top Japanese universities entrance exams. We are planning to introduce an English immersion pathway in the high school using the IBO’s Diploma program in the future and will have our authorization visit in May 2009, and hope to start the program from January 2010.     The Washington University Libraries invites applications for the position of Japanese Catalog Librarian/Subject Librarian.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: Working in the East Asian Library and reporting to the East Asian Studies Librarian, the Japanese Catalog Librarian/Subject Librarian is responsible for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development and management on Japanese studies. This includes performing original and adaptive cataloging of Japanese language materials; selecting materials in all formats and languages on Japanese studies; developing and maintaining electronic resources and services; providing in-person and virtual reference, research consultation, and instruction services; and serving as a liaison to Japanese studies faculty and students.

    QUALIFICATIONS: MLS degree from an ALA accredited school or equivalent; fluency in written and spoken Japanese, and familiarity with scholarly trends in Japanese studies; and knowledge of AACR2rev, LCSH, LC classification, LCRI, and MARC formats required. Advanced academic work in Japanese studies, knowledge of electronic resources in Japanese studies, and knowledge of Japanese publishing industry desirable.
    Working knowledge of Korean desirable. Working experience in an East Asian library or an academic library preferred. Must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team, and communicate effectively in both oral and written English.
