The University of Hawai'i at Manoa Library seeks a creative and
experienced professional to join the Asia Collection. The department
consists of seven area focus sub-collections for: China, Japan, Korea,
Philippines, Russia in East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide professional librarian support to the reference,
collection development and bibliographic instruction activities of the
Asia Collection, particularly related to material about Korea. This
position works with the faculty and students at the University of Hawaii
who study and research Korea. Close contact is maintained with faculty who
teach Korea-related subjects.
This position provides professional reference service at the Asia
Collection reference desk as scheduled and responds to questions and
requests for information and research assistance from faculty, students,
and the general public. The librarian frequently provides in-depth
personal consultation to researchers and students who require it. The
librarian in this position works collegially with the other area
specialists in the Asia Collection, is actively involved in departmental
affairs, and participates in library-wide activities.
The Korea Specialist librarian offers specialized bibliographic
instruction to students in Asian Studies, Korean Studies, and others with
needs for such instruction. The librarian works in cooperation with other
Asia Collection librarians and the teaching faculty to develop specially
tailored instructional programs and prepares specialized bibliographic
guides in print and online to aid in instruction.
Collection development responsibilities include examining newly published
materials in all formats related to Korea in humanities and social
sciences subject areas and making decisions regarding which publications
to purchase or make available for the library. Knowledge of the strengths
and weaknesses of the collection and teaching and research interests at
the University of Hawai'i are essential to performing this task. The Korea
Specialist librarian works with Korean publishers and is expected to be
knowledgeable about Korean publishing trends. The librarian participates
at the national level with other Korea specialists and in consortia.
The librarian in this position is expected to be familiar with recent
developments in information technology, should be competent in web page
development and maintenance, and knowledgeable about digitization and its
application to libraries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Librarian II: ALA accredited MLS or international
equivalent. Librarian III: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent.
Minimum of three years of post-MLS experience in a research library.
Twenty-four post baccalaureate credits of academic study in an
Asia-related field. Applicants at either rank: Ability to read
and translate Korean language research material, work with English
language materials, and romanize Korean characters. Excellent
English-language communication skills. Ability to coordinate the work of
other staff, including student helpers. Enthusiasm for working in an
innovative and changing environment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of the Korean book trade. Experience
writing and receiving grants. Familiarity with consortial resource sharing
arrangements. Previous reference and bibliographic instructional
experience in a specialized collection. Knowledge of other East Asian or
relevant European languages, especially Russian.

University's main library, an ARL research collection supporting programs
in the humanities, social sciences, the sciences and Hawaiian, Pacific and

COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Librarians have faculty status and are members of the faculty collective

Korean Cataloger
Columbia University invites nominations and applications for the position of Korean Cataloger in the C.V. Starr East Asian Library. The incumbent will provide original and copy cataloging for Korean resources in all formats, including national authority work; create NACO records; supervise a support staff member in copy cataloging duties; maintain the quality of the bibliographic database; and promote effective access to Korean resources in the scholarly community locally, nationally, and internationally, through committee work and collaboration. This is a 3 year temporary position with the possibility of extension.
C. V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States with over 840,000 volumes of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Western language materials and over 6,500 periodical titles.
The successful candidate must have: native level Korean language skills; cataloging experience in OCLC; cataloging rules such as AACR2, LCC, LCS H, MARC; some original cataloging experience for all formats using cataloging rules; computer skills, e.g., inputting interface for Korean; good communication skills in English & Korean and general familiarity with research procedures; research skills.
It is desirable for the candidate to be familiar with: AACR2 for Korean language materials; Korean romanization rules (McCune-Reischauer system); knowledge of CJK cataloging issues in the CEAL and ALA communities; BIBCO/CONSER training; the Voyager system; Korean Studies programs; and supervisory skills.

MAJOR DUTIES: The duties described reflect the full performance level of this position:
Carries out a variety of activities in support of acquisition of library materials and arrangement of materials in such a way as to make them readily accessible to users. Uses a variety of manual and automated systems in order to assist in accessing information and for maintaining library collections. Prepares requisitions or other procurement documents, verifies correct bibliographic citations, ensures ordered materials are delivered, checks and processes items in after delivery, and prepares materials for binding, repairs, microfilming, etc. Creates and revises bibliographic records, including initial bibliographic control records (IBCRs).
Performs duties in support of the processing of library collections.
Performs a variety of duties and tasks related to customer service.
Provides efficient, courteous, and prompt in-person service. Communicates with other staff to ensure good customer service.
Performs bibliographic searches and database maintenance/input work.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: EVALUATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.
