The Richard Charles Lee Canada-Hong Kong Library (RCL CHKL) is inviting application for the post of Reference Specialist. The candidate will assist the Library Director in developing a proactive and innovative program for the Library’s reference and outreach activities. <br />
<br />
Established in 2008 and operated within the University of Toronto Libraries system, the RCL CHKL has the largest research collection on Hong Kong studies outside Hong Kong. Its collection also includes materials on Canada-Hong Kong relations and Chinese Canadian studies. The Library has built a global network with scholars and community leaders for enriching its collection, service and program. It successfully organized more than twenty well attended events, including conferences, seminars, book launches and exhibitions on a wide variety of topics related to Hong Kong and Canada-Hong Kong studies. This Library has a growing team working closely together for shaping a system that looks forward to the future of a special collection. <br />
<br />
<b>Position Summary: </b>Provides reference services to library patrons, including faculty, staff, students and members of the external community. Assists in collection maintenance and creation of reference tools; provides support to special collections; provides training to patrons or staff; assists with the creation, updating and distribution of library publications; books material; catalogues material; and provides basic technical support for public workstations. Performs a wide range of other related duties and provides back-up for other staff. <br />
<br />
<b>Duties and Responsibilities: </b>Helps patrons select and use a wide range of online and print reference sources; helps them understand library services, procedures, policies, and the process of searching for information; makes referrals. Helps maintain the reference collection (e.g., shelving, reshelving, shifting); processes and describes newly received items; prepares material for binding or storage; withdraws items from the online catalogue; recommends items for weeding; and occasionally suggests materials for acquisition. Helps create and maintain a variety of online and print reference tools. Assists with a wide range of special projects. Delivers in-class or one-on-one instruction in using the library catalogue, basic web searching and finding journal articles. Assigns work to student assistants; provides workflow leadership, training, scheduling, and record-keeping; serves on library committees; assists with preparations for exhibits and special events; conducts tours; compiles departmental statistics; and prepares reports. <br />

<b>QUALIFICATIONS: </b><br />
Education: Bachelor degree holder, with. M. A. in a discipline related to Hong Kong and China studies preferred. Excellent reading and writing proficiency in traditional and simplified Chinese. Fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin. Proficiency using Pinyin Romanization scheme. <br />
Experience Minimum of two years related experience; public service experience in an academic library and advanced knowledge of the university's online catalogue; knowledge of the University structure, library's local system and library web pages; knowledge of various cataloguing formats; experience providing instruction and staff training. <br />
Other Skills: Working knowledge of word processing (Microsoft Word) and e-mail software; experience with spreadsheet software (Excel) and web design preferred (Plone CMS); ability to operate TV and A/V equipment.<br />

<b>Overview of the position:</b><br />
The University of British Columbia is a recipient of a grant from the Community Historical Recognition Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;The focus of the project is to create a web-based portal and archive on Chinese-Canadian history which will encompass digital assets created by UBC and other CHRP recipients.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br />
<br />
We are seeking a professional librarian/archivist to be responsible primarily for coordinating digitization activities related to the project at UBC, and for supporting the digitization activities of community partners at other organizations. The incumbent undertakes collection analysis and creates metadata for UBC Library resources chosen for inclusion in the project. The position assists in project coordination and design of various schemas, guides, and digital resources as appropriate. Furthermore, the Chinese-Canadian History librarian/archivist supervises students and library assistants and works closely with other project staff.<br />
This position reports directly to Eleanor Yuen, head of the Asian Library and will also take directions from Dr. Henry Yu, Associate Professor, Department of History who is the grant recipient.<br />

A graduate degree in Library or Archival Studies (MAS/MLIS) or equivalent is required from an accredited institution. <br />

Experience with computer technology and software, particularly library and archival management systems and digitization technology is essential. <br />
Experience working with archival and/or non-traditional collections, such as oral histories, audio-visual collections, born-digital collections etc.<br />
Experience with managing projects and/or workflows in an archival or library setting.<br />
Knowledge of digital preservation initiatives, standards and best practices.<br />
Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities and tasks.<br />
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.<br />
Experience in developing partnerships with evidence of successful collaborations.<br />
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills in both English and Chinese language environment<br />
Ability to read and write traditional Chinese, and speak Cantonese.<br />

<b>Preferred qualifications:</b><br />
Knowledge of various metadata standards such as Dublin Core, Rules for Archival Description and AACR/RDA.<br />
Knowledge and understanding of archival theory.<br />
Knowledge of intellectual property, privacy and copyright issues. <br />

	serials in Japanese. Performs original and copy cataloging of Anime and Manga

	relating to the cataloging and processing of Anime and Manga resources. <o:p></o:p>
