Candidates can view the full job description and apply by navigating to <a href=\"https:\/\/jobs.wustl.edu\/\">https:\/\/jobs.wustl.edu\/<\/a> and searching for the job opening number 39974.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <br \/>\nEast Asian Librarian and Chinese\/Japanese Studies Librarian &#8211; Olin Library &#8211; 39974<br \/>\nJob Opening ID<br \/>\n39974<\/p>\n<p>The Washington University Libraries is seeking a highly collaborative, knowledgeable and user-driven professional to serve as East Asian Librarian and Chinese\/Japanese Studies Librarian.&nbsp; The Washington University Libraries, comprised of 12 libraries on the university\u2019s Danforth, West, and Medical School Campuses, reporting to the Vice Provost and University Librarian (in association with 3 campus partners), operate as a unified library system in support of the research, teaching, and learning mission of the university.&nbsp; The Libraries\u2019 house more than 3.6 million books, journals, and other print materials; 2.5 million microforms; 50,000 AV titles; and have access to more than 65,000 electronic journals and more than 500,000 e-books.&nbsp; The libraries&#8217; 135 dedicated professional and support staff serve an increasingly diverse community and exemplify the libraries&#8217; commitment to meet the needs of faculty, staff and students for the present &#8211; and for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>POSITION SUMMARY:<br \/>\nReporting to the Head of Distributed Libraries, responsible for the overall planning and operation of the East Asian Library to provide effective library services to faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and East Asian Studies Program.&nbsp; Responsible for collection development in all East Asian languages and materials, as well as for overseeing cataloging of all vernacular materials in these subject areas.&nbsp; Responsible for outreach, reference, instruction, and collection development and management for <b>Chinese studies, Japanese studies, and\/or Korean studies depending on area of expertise.&nbsp;<\/b> Supervises staff of the East Asian Library including one professional librarian.<\/p>\n<p>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<br \/>\nMaster\u2019s degree from an ALA-accredited school or equivalent.<br \/>\nFluent command of both written and spoken English and Chinese or Japanese.<br \/>\nFormal education in East Asian, Chinese, or Japanese Studies or related field.<br \/>\nTwo years professional library experience.<br \/>\nKnowledge of databases, serials and monographic acquisitions issues and practices.<br \/>\nDemonstrated supervisory and leadership skills including the ability to coach a team.<br \/>\nStrong service attitude with excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.<br \/>\nDemonstrated ability to do detail-oriented work, including strong analytical and problem-solving skills.<br \/>\nAbility to work effectively in a team environment.<br \/>\nAbility to work effectively with a culturally diverse population.<br \/>\nFlexibility and adaptability in a changing environment.<br \/>\nAn understanding of the information needs of a research university.<br \/>\nCommitment to engage in continuing professional development.<br \/>\nMust be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.<br \/>\nMust be able to climb stairs frequently (There is no elevator inside the stacks area).<br \/>\nSome evening and weekend events required.<br \/>\nSome travel required.<\/p>\n<p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: <br \/>\nSecond master\u2019s degree in East Asian or Chinese studies.<br \/>\nCataloging experience with ALA-LC standard for Chinese, Japanese, or Korean Romanization.<br \/>\nReading knowledge of one or more additional East Asian languages.<br \/>\nWorking experience in an East Asian library or an academic library.<br \/>\nSupervisory experience.<br \/>\nExperience with vendor relations.<br \/>\nExperience in acquiring and managing access to electronic resources.<br \/>\nExperience with integrated library systems.
