{"id":7346,"date":"2021-09-20T18:48:22","date_gmt":"2021-09-21T01:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eastasianlib.org\/newsite\/?p=7346"},"modified":"2023-05-10T14:14:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T21:14:09","slug":"the-harvard-yenching-library-librarian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eastasianlib.org\/newsite\/the-harvard-yenching-library-librarian\/","title":{"rendered":"The Harvard-Yenching Library: Librarian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harvard College Library<\/p>\n<p>55578BR<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Although the position will remain posted until filled, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply by\u00a0end of day\u00a0on\u00a0November 15, 2021.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harvard University seeks\u00a0a collaborative, future-oriented leader\u00a0for the position of Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library.\u00a0Harvard-Yenching Library\u00a0is the preeminent academic\u00a0research\u00a0library focusing on East Asia in the western world and\u00a0the third largest\u00a0repository\u00a0in the Harvard Library system.\u00a0The Librarian\u00a0of\u00a0the Harvard-Yenching Library will\u00a0nurture a\u00a0new appreciation\u00a0for\u00a0and a reimagining of the\u00a0Library\u2019s\u00a0unparalleled special collections and\u00a0lead an expansion of\u00a0its digital collections and expertise in digital scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Content Strategies and Associate Librarian of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Librarian\u00a0of\u00a0the Harvard-Yenching Library provides leadership and oversight for the\u00a0Library\u2019s\u00a0staff, budget, operations, and programs that support a diverse array of collection development, research support, teaching and learning, digital scholarship, and community and international engagement activities centered on the library\u2019s expertise in Asian and East Asian studies.\u00a0The Librarian actively seeks out and builds cooperative approaches in\u00a0the development of services.<\/p>\n<p>The successful\u00a0candidate\u00a0will\u00a0possess a\u00a0wide-ranging knowledge of\u00a0Asian and East Asian studies;\u00a0an understanding of the needs of the Asian and East Asian\u00a0studies\u00a0community both nationally and internationally;\u00a0the ability to find balance among\u00a0the needs and use of\u00a0print and digital materials; and\u00a0a\u00a0commitment to\u00a0adopting new technologies and standards that will improve access to and use of Harvard-Yenching Library holdings.\u00a0Equally importantly, the\u00a0successful candidate will have the ability to inspire and appreciatively lead the\u00a0Library\u2019s\u00a0valued staff; a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, belonging, and antiracism;\u00a0a\u00a0user-driven orientation; and a collegial outlook and spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Modeling Harvard Library\u2019s value of deep\u00a0collaboration, and\u00a0recognizing the multidisciplinary nature of Asian and East Asian studies, the Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library works in partnership\u00a0with other\u00a0libraries and library departments across the Harvard Library system to the benefit of researchers whose starting place is the Harvard-Yenching Library as well as the entire Harvard community.\u00a0Externally, the Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library will take an active role in collaborative collection development projects within the\u00a0ReCAP\u00a0consortium and the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation.<\/p>\n<p>The Harvard-Yenching Library has a long history of support from and collaboration with the Harvard-Yenching Institute and the Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library plays a primary role in nurturing and maintaining this relationship.\u00a0The Librarian of the Harvard-Yenching Library works closely\u00a0and communicates broadly\u00a0with faculty and senior administrators and serves on\u00a0university and library committees as well as\u00a0representing Harvard-Yenching Library in professional organizations and to other external constituencies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job-Specific Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oversees all facets of the Harvard-Yenching Library: collection development; research, teaching, and learning; management, staffing, fiscal control.<\/li>\n<li>The incumbent directly supervises five professional librarians, one curatorial assistant, and one administrative coordinator within the Harvard-Yenching Library. [N.B.: Technical services and access services are provided centrally by Harvard Library]<\/li>\n<li>Management\n<ul>\n<li>In collaboration with library leadership in Harvard Library, direct the strategic planning process for Harvard-Yenching Library.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain administrative oversight of Harvard-Yenching Library.<\/li>\n<li>Plan, develop, administer and evaluate library services to faculty, staff and students.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and recommend annual budget; monitor budget expenditures; assist with grant preparation and writing.<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize and lead multiple projects while meeting deadlines and budget targets.<\/li>\n<li>Recruit, hire, manage, and evaluate staff.<\/li>\n<li>Promote staff development activities.<\/li>\n<li>Work collegially with peers and colleagues across the Harvard Library in a variety of committees and working groups.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain awareness of national trends and developments Asian and East Asian librarianship.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to professional organizations at the national and international level, recognize library trends and opportunities, and use this knowledge to enrich local programs and strategic planning.<\/li>\n<li>With Library Building Operations and FAS Building Operations, manage the Harvard-Yenching Library facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Research and Instruction\n<ul>\n<li>Collaborate with faculty and colleagues across the library system to insure continuing excellence in Asian and East Asian research and instruction programs.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with colleagues to develop effective strategies to meet user needs.<\/li>\n<li>Plan and implement a program of library services that meet the teaching and research needs of diverse departments by developing relationships within and among departments to ensure librarians have a working rapport with faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Supervise and evaluate outreach efforts to the various academic departments and programs.<\/li>\n<li>Promote collections and services to graduate and undergraduate students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Collection Management\n<ul>\n<li>Coordinate the management of the collections for Asian and East Asian studies to ensure the selection and maintenance of well-balanced collections to support the teaching and research programs at Harvard.<\/li>\n<li>Assess, create, oversee, and leverage innovative collections. Monitor vendor relationships.<\/li>\n<li>Promote cooperative planning for collections, services, and preservation of materials, especially with ReCAP and the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>External Collaboration\n<ul>\n<li>Participate actively in pertinent professional organizations.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain collaborative programs with area institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Basic Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ALA accredited\u00a0MLS\u00a0or equivalent\u00a0experience in academic library administration.<\/li>\n<li>A minimum of ten\u00a0years\u00a0professional experience.<\/li>\n<li>6\u00a0or more\u00a0years\u00a0management\u00a0experience.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge\u00a0of a minimum of one East Asian language.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated\u00a0knowledge in East Asian languages, culture, history, and civilization.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated record of collaboration at intra- and interinstitutional levels.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated\u00a0knowledge\u00a0or experience with\u00a0print and digital\u00a0publishing\u00a0in\u00a0East Asian countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional Qualifications and Skills<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advanced degree in a subject field in Asian studies.<\/li>\n<li>Experience in digital scholarship\/digital humanities projects and approaches.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent\u00a0written and oral communication\u00a0skills.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to inspire staff to share and achieve them.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and manage change; experience supporting the professional development of staff.<\/li>\n<li>Experience building partnerships to enhance learning and\u00a0student success.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to\u00a0collaborate effectively in a decentralized matrix environment.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated\u00a0interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse users and colleagues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Physical Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are no notable physical demands associated with this position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Working Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The work associated with this position is performed in an office setting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Harvard-Yenching Library\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With collections of over 1.5 million volumes and extensive\u00a0visual, manuscript, and other\u00a0special collections, Harvard-Yenching Library is\u00a0the third largest library in the Harvard Library system\u00a0and the preeminent\u00a0academic research\u00a0collection related to East Asian\u00a0studies outside of Asia.
