The system<br \/>\nconsists of 40 libraries located on three university campuses: St. George, Mississauga, and<br \/>\nScarborough. This array of college libraries, special collections, and specialized libraries and<br \/>\ninformation centres supports the teaching and research requirements of over 300 graduate<br \/>\nprograms, more than 70 professional programs, and about 700 undergraduate degree programs. In<br \/>\naddition to more than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, the library system currently provides<br \/>\naccess to millions of electronic resources in various forms and over 31,000 linear metres of archival<br \/>\nmaterial. More than 150,000 new print volumes are acquired each year. The Libraries\u2019 data centre<br \/>\nhouses more than 600 servers with a storage capacity of 1.5 petabytes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library is a leading research library in North America and the most<br \/>\nextensive research library in Canada for East Asian Studies. As the intellectual and cultural hub of the<br \/>\nacademic community for East Asian and Asian Canadian-related studies and programs at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Toronto, the library is committed to engaging with faculty, students, and the wider<br \/>\ncommunity to provide exceptional resources and services in support of scholarship, research, and<br \/>\nlearning.<br \/>\nThe library\u2019s history can be traced back to the 1930s when a collection of rare materials from China,<br \/>\nknown today as the Mu Collection (\u6155\u6c0f\u85cf\u66f8), was acquired. Since then, the library has grown<br \/>\nsignificantly to encompass a premier research collection of over 700,000 volumes of materials in<br \/>\nChinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan, as well as limited resources in Mongolian, Manchu, and<br \/>\nUighur. In addition to its impressive physical collection, the library provides access to numerous<br \/>\nelectronic resources, making it a valuable asset to the field of East Asian Studies. Its resources and<br \/>\nservices support scholars and researchers in the region and beyond, providing unparalleled access to<br \/>\nrare and unique resources.<br \/>\nThrough continued expansion of its collections and partnerships, the library is dedicated to<br \/>\nsupporting teaching, research, and learning both within and beyond the university. The library has<br \/>\ndone multiple digitization projects to improve discoverability and accessibility of the library\u2019s unique<br \/>\nand rare collections through various partnerships and is committed to developing collections in Asian<br \/>\nCanadian studies, in collaboration with other central libraries at the UTL and external partners and<br \/>\ncommunity partners.<br \/>\nThe library also organizes a range of public outreach events working with campus partners, local<br \/>\ncommunity groups, and national and international partners to inspire scholarship and cultivate<br \/>\nrelations with the campus and the community. Its physical space has gone through a series of<br \/>\nexpansion and revitalization processes to create a vibrant and user-friendly space for its community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Opportunity<\/strong><br \/>\nThe University of Toronto Libraries seeks an innovative, service-oriented, and collaborative<br \/>\nprofessional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Chinese Studies Librarian. The successful<br \/>\ncandidate will report to the Director of the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library. The incumbent will<br \/>\nprovide specialized support for the planning, development, acquisition, cataloguing, and<br \/>\nmanagement of the library\u2019s growing Chinese Studies collections. The successful candidate will also<br \/>\nwork closely with subject liaison librarians, archivists, and members of the Central Library\u2019s Collection<br \/>\nDevelopment Department, Metadata Services, as well as provide public service and research support<br \/>\nto meet the growing needs of a diverse community of faculty, visiting scholars, graduate and<br \/>\nundergraduate students.<br \/>\n\u2022 Act as the primary liaison librarian for Chinese Studies across relevant academic departments and<br \/>\nprograms in the humanities and social sciences at U of T, and proactively engage with faculty and<br \/>\nstudents to understand their information needs<br \/>\n\u2022 Develop and deliver tailored instruction and learning opportunities in various formats to support<br \/>\nthe curriculum and advance learning outcomes for faculty and students in Chinese Studies<br \/>\n\u2022 Provide and promote innovative services and resources to enhance the research and academic<br \/>\nexcellence of the University in the field of Chinese Studies<br \/>\n\u2022 Acquire and maintain collections of Chinese-language resources in all formats that are relevant to<br \/>\nthe study of the region and in support of the various Chinese Studies academic programs,<br \/>\ncommunicate with Chinese book vendors and other resource providers to ensure smooth<br \/>\noperation of acquisition, and supervise an acquisition staff<br \/>\n\u2022 Identify and evaluate unique and archival resources for Chinese Studies and Chinese Canadian<br \/>\nStudies<br \/>\n\u2022 Undertake original cataloguing of Chinese materials in all formats to ensure their discoverability,<br \/>\nsupervise an original cataloguer\/metadata creation specialist and graduate student assistants,<br \/>\nand prepare name authority metadata for contribution to NACO according to the standards of the<br \/>\nProgram for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC)<br \/>\n\u2022 Collaborate with librarians and staff in other library programs regarding acquisition, cataloguing,<br \/>\nmaintenance, preservation, and conservation of Chinese language resources<br \/>\n\u2022 Participate in the department\u2019s reference desk services and provide reference and research<br \/>\nsupport to students, faculty members, staff, and visiting scholars<br \/>\n\u2022 Work with other University of Toronto campuses in collaborative collection development efforts.<br \/>\n\u2022 Facilitate connections with external researchers, donors, and international partners<br \/>\n\u2022 Contribute to the broader professional community by sharing knowledge in scholarly\/professional<br \/>\nvenues and through service to the University and the profession<br \/>\n\u2022 Participate in library and other committees as appropriate<br \/>\nThis search aligns with the University\u2019s commitment to strategically and proactively promote diversity<br \/>\namong our community members (Statement on Equity, Diversity &amp; Excellence).
