This position will join the Research and Instructional Services department made up of subject liaison librarians, branch managers, and acquisitions specialists who work together within a dynamic and flexible interdisciplinary team structure to support research, teaching, and learning in the humanities, fine arts, sciences, and social sciences and to partner across the Libraries in support of discovery, data management, and scholarly communication.<\/p>\n<p>The person in this position serves as subject liaison librarian for programs in the humanities and social sciences as assigned, primarily for departments that work in the broad and interdisciplinary field of Asian Studies, supporting the teaching, learning, and research practices of scholars by providing specialized research and instructional services, and developing core and specialized research collections. The Asian Studies Librarian will participate in the University Libraries\u2019 instruction program to deliver and shape high quality outreach and instructional services to faculty, students, and scholars by integrating new and emerging information literacy principles and technology; and will provide specialized research services and outreach to faculty, students, and scholars.<\/p>\n<p>The librarian will develop and maintain research collections related to Asian Studies; help to curate collections of rare and unique materials related to Asian Studies in the Special Collections; and develop and collaborate on programs, exhibits, and events.<\/p>\n<p>The Asian Studies Librarian also works closely with many campus and external partners, such as UNC Chapel Hill\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asianstudies.unc.edu\/\">Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carolinaasiacenter.unc.edu\/\">Carolina Asia Center<\/a>, a pan-Asia National Resource Center;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/\">Duke University Libraries;<\/a>\u00a0regional consortia; and national and international groups to build interdisciplinary partnerships in support of local research, teaching, and learning needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Required<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Master\u2019s degree from an ALA-accredited program, or a related advanced degree<\/li>\n<li>Strong academic grounding in Asian Studies or a closely related field<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work independently and excel in a dynamic, collaborative, team-based environment<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of historical, cultural, and linguistic issues of importance to scholars of the relevant regions of the world<\/li>\n<li>Experience with library instruction, training, or classroom teaching<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of scholarly publishing and research dissemination practices for relevant regions of the world, including trends in digital scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Experience with library research resources and tools in relevant subject areas<\/li>\n<li>Experience creating welcoming and inclusive learning and research environments<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse user communities, including students, faculty, researchers, colleagues, and community members<\/li>\n<li>Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Written and spoken proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin)<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to professional development and growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Preferred<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to read traditional Chinese characters<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the study of East, South, and Southeast Asia<\/li>\n<li>Experience providing research services, preferably in an academic setting<\/li>\n<li>Experience with assessing the impact of library services and\/or collections<\/li>\n<li>Experience with building research collections in an academic library<\/li>\n<li>Understanding of scholarly communications and open access issues as related to Asian Studies<\/li>\n<li>Experience working with rare or unique materials related to Asian Studies<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of successful participation in collaborative projects<\/li>\n<li>Experience with digital scholarship tools and experience partnering with campus constituents on digital scholarship production<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The University and The Libraries<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unc.edu\/\">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a>\u00a0is the country\u2019s oldest state university. Standard state benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement.
