East Asia Library, Stanford University: Director

Position Summary: Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Director, East Asia Library.  The Libraries values are rooted in a commitment of mutual respect, the idea that every member of the staff has something to contribute, and that learning is constant.  We seek a team member who is ready to share their skills and perspectives.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree (PhD required) in East Asian Studies or related field required. Broad knowledge of research trends and methodologies in East Asian Studies, and expert knowledge of one or more specific fields/disciplines within East Asian Studies is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated managerial ability, as demonstrated by 3-5 years management experience in an academic, research, or special library; or in an academic institution; or in a research center, is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of scholarly communication and academic publishing practices throughout East Asia and arising from East Asian Studies or equivalent is required.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly and professional achievement is required; as evidenced by a record of scholarly publications, academic presentations, and teaching experience is required.
  • Proficiency (speaking, writing, and reading) required in at least one of the following languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean. Preference given to candidates with proficiency in more than one of these languages.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and familiarity with current and emerging technologies for libraries and education required.
  • Ability to work effectively and equitably with diverse groups, including staff, faculty, students, and donors is required.
  • MLS/MLIS or equivalent from accredited school is preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

Working Conditions:

  • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
