UC Davis: Chinese Language Cataloging Specialist

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Metadata Management Unit Head, performs complex copy and original cataloging of monographic and Chinese language resources in various formats and subject areas; upgrades and enriches existing WorldCat bibliographic records following local and national standards; troubleshoots issues related to authority, bibliographic, holding and item records in library repository; works on special projects. Collaborates with the other staff to catalog serials and non-book formats, e.g. visual and electronic resources.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license, certification and/or educational degree if required of the position.

  • High proficiency in reading both simplified and traditional Chinese scripts, and the ability to transliterate them according to the ALA-LC Romanization Table for Chinese.
  • General knowledge of academic cataloging functions and procedures.
  • Reasoning skills and judgment to interpret information, apply guidelines, make referrals, and ability to understand and implement goals, policies and procedures.
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in using standard PC applications and cataloging utilities.
  • Good communication skills, flexibility, can-do attitude, interest in continuous growth and self-initiative.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 years of experience performing complex copy and original cataloging of various formats in various languages.
  • Experienced with working with the cataloging module of an integrated library system, preferably Ex Libris’ Alma.
  • Experienced with batch processing and data transformation.
  • Understanding of the relationship between pinyin and Wade-Giles systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems/platforms such as Ex Libris Alma.

Physical Demands

  • Position requires lifting materials weighing up to 15 pounds; maneuvering loaded book trucks weighing 300-700 pounds; reaching or bending for materials on shelves from 5 to 85″ high.”
  • Read small print on computer screens, read and interpret annotated requests; operate keyboard equipment. Sit for extended periods of time.
