Description

The Diamond Law Library at Columbia University has an opening for a Librarian for East Asian Law, who will support research and teaching of the faculty and students of Columbia Law School by developing the Law Library’s Japanese, Chinese, and Korean law collections, and providing reference services to students, faculty, visitors, fee-based service members, and the local, national, and international legal community.

Reporting to the Associate Director, the successful candidate will develop Columbia’s Japanese, Chinese and Korean law collections by selecting new materials for purchase and selecting new additions from gift materials.  The position will also serve as the initial contact for gifts of monographs, serials, and E-resources; and will identify which books to weed or transfer to offsite storage.  Responsibilities also include training law students and others through classroom teaching, workshops, and one-on-one instruction; providing in-depth research assistance for faculty members; creating and maintaining LibGuides; and other related duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

●      JD or equivalent and/or MLS or equivalent from an accredited institution;

●      Demonstrated linguistic proficiency in verbal and written communication in English and Japanese; competence in an additional East Asian language is highly desirable;

●      Demonstrated knowledge of current relevant library and/or scholarly communications trends and issues as they pertain to Japanese/East Asian law;

●      Advanced knowledge of collection development principles  and practices

●      Extensive experience with the use of legal and non-legal research tools;

●      Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills;

●      Strong service and teamwork orientation; and

●      Technological competency and a willingness to learn new technology as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

●      Experience with using Japanese or other book vendor acquisition platforms for selection purposes.
