The University of California, Santa Barbara, is one of ten campuses that comprise the University of California system and is a member of the exclusive Association of American Universities. The University Library at UC Santa Barbara is a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries.

The UC Santa Barbara Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to support current and emerging research strategies and methods of scholarly communication by developing collections and providing research services that support East Asian Studies. The successful candidate will actively work to maximize the strength of the UCSB collection in print, electronic, and emerging formats to support faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies and affiliates of the East Asia Center, including scholars throughout the campus who are engaged in the study of East Asia. The expected effective date of this position is July 1, 2019 or later.


Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Services, the East Asian Studies Librarian enhances research, teaching, and learning by shaping the library’s research collections in East Asian Studies and related interdisciplinary areas; provides specialized research and instruction services for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in East Asian Studies and additional areas as assigned, including consultation on scholarly communication issues as needed; works collaboratively with the library’s research data curators to support scholars in the assigned area who are engaged with new methodologies in digital scholarship; works with the Director of Development to build strong relationships with current and prospective donors; and builds and sustains trusted relationships with faculty in the assigned area to further the library’s strategic goals and advance the research, teaching, and service mission of the University.

The East Asian Studies Librarian oversees the organization and management of the Henry H. Tai East Asian Collection, including collaboration with cataloging and metadata, acquisitions, receiving, Access Services, and other stakeholders that contribute to the Collection’s daily operations. Collection development and access responsibilities include selection, assessment, and life-cycle management of scholarly information resources that support research and teaching in East Asian Studies, including resources in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, as well as in English and other languages. In close collaboration with collection managers, the East Asian Librarian exercises responsible stewardship of the collection funds allocated to the assigned area in order to ensure maximum effectiveness of the library’s investment in collections and provide the greatest value for successful research and learning outcomes. Recognizing the unique strength of interdisciplinary scholarship on the UC Santa Barbara campus, the incumbent works collaboratively to develop scholarly collections and provide access to resources that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and support new fields of inquiry. The incumbent contributes to developing distinctive physical and digital collections and integrating the library’s rich primary source materials into campus curricula in the relevant subject areas. They are attuned to the new UC wide, national, and international trends and initiatives to seek strategic opportunities from emerging open science and data-intensive research trends to re-envision UCSB Collection for the global user community. The East Asian Librarian participates in the library’s Ethnic, Gender and Area Studies Collections Group and contributes to area-specific systemwide activities of the UC Libraries.

UC Santa Barbara librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning, governance, and shared decision making. Advancement is partially based on professional contribution beyond the primary assignment. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, such contribution to the campus, UC system, and profession.

At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or an international equivalent, OR graduate-level degree in a relevant field and at least two years’ academic library experience.

Research-level knowledge of East Asian scholarship in the humanities or social sciences;
Demonstrated understanding of the information needs of researchers engaged in topics relating to East Asian studies;
Advanced reading and speaking proficiency in either Mandarin Chinese or Japanese;
Working knowledge in both Chinese and Japanese;
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
Excellent interpersonal, analytical, assessment, problem solving, and project management skills;
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse campus communities, and with library staff from diverse cultural backgrounds in a dynamic and complex organization; and
Demonstrated commitment to professional development and service.

Advanced degree in East Asian Studies;
Additional East Asian language;
Familiarity with the cataloging of East Asian materials;
Three years of experience in East Asian Studies librarianship;
Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication and publishing issues;
Experience conducting or supporting digital scholarship and data-intensive research; and
Experience with teaching in a library or academic setting.

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
